Artifact: Internet Safety Blog Post
Reflection:
The Internet Safety Blog Post, created in ITEC 7430 Internet Tools in the Classroom, is the artifact selected for this element. This post was created as an informative read for students, teachers, and parents the blog introduces a fictional scenario about a potential danger of using social media. It is followed by two steps to reduce the risk of Internet predators: education and action.
The following description is how Safe, Healthy, Legal, and Ethical Use under the Standard of Digital Citizenship and Responsibility was mastered. Internet safety is a growing issue as use of the Internet expands to all demographics. Students do not always realize the risk associated with using social media sites and can be careless at times. Educating students on Internet safety is the first step to improving interest safety. By introducing them to organizations such as the Personal Protection Systems Inc., which developed an educational system designed to inform and educate students on Internet, they become aware of the risks. Another step is to take action, and pro-activity from the support side of education, setting filters. There are many services and websites available that offer filtering services.
This artifact was an eye opening assignment which enabled me to learn even more about Internet safety. Because Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat are so popular among students they become sitting ducks. With the proper information and training they can be cautious and aware. There are so many options when it comes to Internet safety, therefore if I had to change one thing about this artifact it would be to provide a couple more specific options parents could engage in to promote the safety of their student.
There are so many opportunities for students to engage in learning assignments using social media, and using the information from this article could impact student learning. This empowers students to freely and confidently use social media sites both for education and entertainment in a responsible way. The impact of this artifact can be seen through tracking social media use during the school year. Teachers need to use these opportunities as teaching tools to raise awareness and foster more responsible digital interaction.
