ITEC 7305 has been an important component of the ITEC experience because it taught the importance of data use in schools and the variety of ways data impacts the school. Three specific takeaways from this class are:
1. Look beyond the superficial number with data
2. Share data and its importance with enthusiasm
3. Incorporate data thoroughly when sharing results
In order to get an accurate reading of the data collection the data must be look at beyond the surface. A quick review or glance cannot provide the information needed to reveal the changes that need to be made to improve student learning. Also, the strengths will not be evident, therefore the data team will not be able to share the appropriate information with teaches to continue productive learning. Instead a comprehensive review needs to take place in order to fully understand how to improve the school.
When sharing data there will be times of positive sharing and times to share areas of improvement. Regardless of the results you are sharing you need to have a positive outlook to encourage teachers to either continue on a successful path or be encouraged to make improvements, without feeling defensive.
Lastly, when sharing data it needs to be discussed thoroughly in order for the staff to understand how the data was achieved, and learn where and what changes need to be made.
This course offered many valuable field experiences, but the Action Plan II was most valuable for me. I am a visual person, and having a one year action plan for implementation laid out in front of me keeps me focused and on track to ensure the teachers are getting the most from the data coach and data team. It is a great plan that care easily be shared with all stakeholders in the school on a shared drive to keep everyone informed.
With my newly obtained data knowledge and confidence in obtaining, explain, and sharing data I plan to use these skills at my school. This class helped to expand my repertoire of knowledge and fosters a more comprehensive learning experience that I can take in to the workplace. There will always be resisters when implementing any new idea in the school, this is a challenge I feel like I can take on by sharing relevant knowledge that will benefit most teachers in the school. I am grateful for what I have learned throughout this class and am looking forward to putting my newly learn skills to the test.
